Tom has spent his life standing up to hate in war zones overseas and on the streets of his own hometown when the Nazis came to Charlottesville.
This year our country turns 250 years old. That milestone should make us proud, and it should make us watchful. The freedoms in the Bill of Rights were written by the first person ever to hold this seat: James Madison of Orange County, who beat James Monroe in 1789 by promising to add those protections to the Constitution. Free speech. Privacy. Due process. Equal treatment under the law. Those rights belong to all of us and they exist for one reason: to protect ordinary people from a government that would push them around.
Right now those freedoms are under threat. People are being investigated, punished, and hounded for who they are or what they believe. Tom has seen up close what this looks like—overseas in war zones and at home in August 2017, when armed hate groups marched on Charlottesville. Tom was there in the streets that day and he will always defend our Constitution and our neighbors.
