Tom Perriello, a Virginia Democrat who was swept from the House in 2010, in large part because of his vote for the Affordable Care Act, is trying for a comeback this year — but far from running away from that vote more than a dozen years ago, he’s embracing it.

“What’s aged politically even better than my support for the A.C.A.,” Mr. Perriello said, “was the fact that I was pushing right to the end for it to be stronger.”

Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics, said Perriello enters the race as a clear favorite for the Democratic nomination, citing his experience, name recognition and political network.

“Perriello is a ringer for the Democratic nomination,” Sabato said. “He has national, international, as well as local contacts galore. He has the financing that he’s going to need to run. He has the right positioning for this particular year.”

We must ensure that our seniors receive the benefits they have been promised. Your benefits and the future of Social Security and Medicare should not be auctioned off to private investors who seek to reap profits off your lifetime of contribution. For those living on a fixed income, these skyrocketing costs of gas and groceries are effectively the same as cutting Social Security.

Healthcare You Can Afford

We are honored that Virginia’s Fifth district has produced and continues to house thousands of veterans and military families. Veterans earned their benefits and our respect by serving our country. They deserve to be greeted every day with honor not with red tape and hoops to jump through, just to access the benefits they have more than earned. Tom has spent years fighting to keep our nation’s promises to service members, veterans, and their families. And he has produced results that make a real difference to those who have served.

If you work hard, you should be able to afford a home. Instead, home prices are outpacing wages, rents are rising fast, and too many families are being priced out of the communities where they grew up. In parts of this district, rents have jumped more than 25% since the pandemic, and a median-income family cannot afford the median-priced home. Tom is focused on bringing costs down and restoring a fair housing market. That means building more housing, cutting red tape, and taking on the corporate practices that are driving prices higher.

"I'm hearing about this from people of every political stripe," Perriello said. "I don't just mean red and blue. I mean the whole colors of the rainbow.
“This is an opportunity to have someone who’s going to really care about this area and the communities across the Blue Ridge and really focus on making health care more affordable, ending this war that nobody thinks is a good idea and bringing down prices,” Perriello said, “and I think that’s what people feel they’re going to get from the Perriello campaign.”

Perriello said during a Tuesday press conference that the court’s ruling is “a series of decisions by unelected judges who will make it more likely that there’s not that system of checks and balances at play,” adding that its decision will “basically leave extremely unrepresentative and rigged maps in place.”

He added that he will not drastically pivot his campaign strategies despite the court ruling, but said that he remains committed to defeating incumbent VA-05 Rep.
