New Perriello Ad Exposes McGuire as Sole Senator to Vote Against Child Marriage Protections

“Her Life” highlights McGuire’s record on child marriage, Epstein files transparency, and protections for children online

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA — Today, the Tom Perriello for Congress campaign released a new television ad, “Her Life,” spotlighting Congressman John McGuire’s record on legislation intended to protect children, including his lone vote against raising Virginia’s minimum marriage age from 16 to 18.

In 2024, McGuire was the only Virginia State Senator, Republican or Democrat, to vote against the legislation. The bill passed 39-1 and was signed into law by Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin.

“I was serving in the General Assembly when John McGuire cast that vote, and I remember how important this legislation was,” said Delegate Katrina Callsen. “Republicans and Democrats came together to protect 16-year-old girls from child marriage, and John McGuire was the only senator who voted against it. This wasn't a complicated decision. It was about protecting children. John McGuire owes every parent and every young girl in Virginia an explanation for why he stood alone.”

The ad also scrutinizes McGuire’s refusal to sign a congressional petition seeking a vote on the release of additional Epstein-related records, his vote for legislation that would have shielded Big Tech companies from state regulations designed to protect children online.

“Thirty-nine senators voted to raise the marriage age to 18. John McGuire was the only no,” said Tom Perriello “Virginians deserve an explanation for that vote and for the choices he has made on other legislation affecting children’s safety.”

The ad ends with a reminder that the 16-year-old girl at the center of its message is too young to vote in November's election.
