Perriello Launches General Election Campaign to Lower Costs, Tackle Corruption, Restore Common Sense
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA — Today, Tom Perriello launched his general election campaign to reclaim Virginia's Fifth Congressional District, after officially earning the Democratic nomination for the seat. Tom is focused on getting costs down, paychecks up, and corruption out lowering costs, raising wages, and taking government back from the powerful special interests driving up prices for working families.
"For months, I’ve visited every corner of the district to hear from thousands of local families. Folks are struggling to make it to the next paycheck, and they are fed up with this Congress making everything more expensive, more corrupt, and just plain stupid,” said Perriello. “My top priority will be to cut costs and bills by getting rid of the trade war, Iran war, and war on common sense. Our communities deserve a real fighter who refuses to take money from the lobbyists and corporate PACs, and people around here know they can trust me to do just that."
Throughout his career, Perriello has built a reputation for taking on powerful interests and putting people ahead of politics. In Congress, he cast the deciding vote to protect people with pre-existing conditions, knowing it could cost him his seat. He has fought to lower health care costs, raise wages, expand rural broadband, support veterans, and stand up to corporate monopolies and corruption.
"The contrast couldn't be starker,” said Perriello. “I wasted no time in Congress to deliver economic relief to every family in this district, and I kept fighting to bring down healthcare costs and keep our rural clinics open. But John McGuire did what the insurance lobbyists wanted, and sent our costs through the roof and rural health services headed to closure.”
“Together we will get costs down, paychecks up, and the corruption out of Washington.”
Perriello previously represented Virginia’s Fifth District, the only Democrat in a generation to have flipped a congressional district west of Richmond. He has spent 20 years leading non-profit organizations fighting to increase wages, expand affordable healthcare, and protect the rights guaranteed by our Constitution. Tom has also served two tours representing the United States as a Special Envoy. He has never taken money from lobbyists or corporate PACs and has been endorsed by End Citizens United and other anti-corruption groups. He has the support of Gov. Spanberger, Senators Kaine and Warner and more than 70 local and statewide leaders.
